Smart Watches - A New Era of Mobile Computing......

The rapid technological advancements in the last few decades have opened up the possibility to transform the wristwatch into a device that is capable of doing a lot more than keeping time. Smartwatches have been in development since 1972 when the Hamilton Watch Company came up with the "Pulsar" device. Whereas, a major boost to the smartwatch development was received with the launch of smartphone operating systems like Google's Android, Apple's iOS, and Microsoft's Windows family’s mobile platform.

The developments in computer hardware technology, as well as software technology, have made it possible to assemble small sensor chips and other circuitry into devices such as watches and eyeglasses. Moreover, the interoperability features of the modern mobile operating system can be used to install the same core on these devices. The first smartwatch to be developed by Sony was named the "Sony Smart Watch", a wearable electronic watch that could integrate with the Sony Android phones. However, this specific device had its own operating system that was compatible with Android devices.

A major boost to this relatively new industry was received when Samsung came up with their advanced smartwatch, Galaxy Gear. Unlike Sony Smart Watch, this device runs on the Android platform but its connectivity to smartphones and tablets is currently limited to the latest Galaxy Note and Tab devices. It incorporates most features that are expected out of a next-generation wearable device.

Galaxy Gear can connect to a mobile device using the latest version of Bluetooth technology, and perform tasks that make certain features in the phone redundant. The smartwatch can view incoming calls, make outbound calls based on voice commands, can take photos using a small camera located on the watch dial, and many more. Apart from showing the time, the device is also equipped to display the current temperature and can also monitor certain health parameters with the help of Android apps. The best thing about this device is of course the fact that most apps already available on the Google Play store are compatible with it.

It is expected that other operating systems like iOS and Windows 8 would come up with their own versions of a smartwatch. In fact, there is a high likelihood that Apple will soon launch an advanced smartwatch named Apple i-Watch. Other technology manufacturers like Qualcomm have also announced their intentions to develop smartwatches, which makes it all the more clear that the future of mobile computing does not depend entirely on smartphones and tablets.

The Apple Watch 7 is the best yet. It’s not a major upgrade over the Apple Watch 6 in terms of features, but it does have a larger display in new Apple Watch 7 sizes. The Apple Watch comes in 41mm and 45mm versions for the first time, complementing the large screen. The seventh-generation Apple gets some exclusive watch faces and a full QWERTY keyboard, too.

While we would like the Apple Watch to improve its 18-hour battery life, the Series 7 does benefit from faster charging. You can completely juice it up in about an hour, letting it spend less time hooked up to the new USB-C Magnetic cord and more time with you on the go. Whether you want a smartwatch for working out, answering calls from your wrist, or using the best Apple Watch apps, this is the best smartwatch for you.

What is the best smartwatch?

After testing dozens of the best smartwatches, our top pick is the Apple Watch Series  7 ($399), which builds on years of health features and communication upgrades, but adds a brighter screen, thinner display borders, and faster charging. We've only heard a few rumors about the AppleWatch 8 and watchOS9, so for now, the Series 7 is the best you can get.

The Apple Watch 3 ($199) remains a very good value as well, although the Apple Watch SE ($279) is a better option worth checking out. The SE is a hybrid model, lacking come high-end health features and an always-on display, but it still has a compass, fall detection, and GPS. Both are often discounted thanks to the best Apple Watch deals.

Samsung's Galaxy Watch 4 ($249/$349) is the most worthy Apple Watch contender — in fact, it's the best smartwatch for Android and the most compelling Wear OS 3 smartwatch. It offers two different designs, and yes, one of them maintains the fan-favorite rotating bezel. The latest smartwatch is the first to run the new unified Google Wear OS software and comes with body composition analysis.

The best smartwatch from Fitbit is the Fitbit Sense ($329). We like how it gives you a well-rounded view of your body, rather than expecting you to self-administer readings and tests.

Coming in the fall will be the Google Pixel Watch, too. It'll feature a round face and borrow some fitness-tracking features from Fitbit.
